Well this analysis will not be long. The results are almost identical to 2007. 90% of the top priorities from 2007 remain as such for 2008 which is not good. When looking at the top 3 priorities which I always like to focus on, the story is unfortunately the same. The trains are crowded, take too long to show up, & have delays. The 3 key factors between a positive or negative ride are covered by the A Train but not in the way it would like.

In the end, for a complete review you can venture to last year’s results as my feelings have not changed.

A.R.C. Project Gets Boost From Federal Approval

This past Wednesday, a major transportation project that would benefit the tri-state region took one step closer to becoming a reality. Federal environmental officials approved plans for the A.R.C. project. The A.R.C. project is the Access to the Region’s Core which would create a second tunnel underneath the Hudson River. This would double commuter railroad capacity between New Jersey & Manhattan.

The Tri-State Transportation Campaign’s New Jersey Advocate Zoe Baldwin has more in this entry:

The Federal Transit Administration okayed plans for the Access to the Region’s Core tunnel yesterday, bringing the historic project a step closer to fruition. Approval of the environmental impact statement, preliminary design, and a new station to handle increased ridership enables NJ Transit to seek final design approval and negotiate federal funding for the final $3 billion needed.

I have rarely ridden New Jersey Transit. So I can’t say this project would positively impact me directly. However I do completely support this project as I would any that is a major positive for mass transit & the riders who depend on it. Commuter railroads are a great alternate to vehicular use when possible so projects like this one can only benefit everyone over the long haul.

Potential Stimulus Package = More Of The Same

As I wrote about, one of the major issues overlooked in last year’s presidential election was the investment into our country’s mass transit infrastructure. I personally voted for the Obama/Biden ticket for many reasons with one of them being that they would be more serious about investing in mass transit. The news seemed to reflect this with the talk of a huge stimulus package that will probably get passed in the short term.

Yesterday, the House Appropriations Committee released a summery of the House’s version of the stimulus legislation. Tri-State Transportation Campaign Executive Director Kate Slevin has more in this entry:

Today the House Appropriations Committee released a summary of the House version of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Bill of 2009, the proposed federal stimulus legislation. The announcement says the legislation will be considered in the next few weeks. On the transportation front, the proposed legislation includes $30 billion for highway construction and $10 billion for transit and rail “to reduce traffic congestion and gas consumption.”

The highway portion will fund some of the 5,100 highway and bridge projects, totaling $64 billion, that could start construction within six months. There is no detail as to how this money will be allocated or whether it will go to maintenance or expansion projects.

Click here for the complete entry.

Why am I not surprised to see mass transit get a smaller portion of the funds? I will be honest, I would love to see a fair 50/50 split of money between roads & mass transit. However I am a realist & understand that hell will freeze over before an even split occurs with any sort of funding now or ever. However if the ratio is similar to what was released in yesterday’s summary, it will once again feature mass transit getting the short end of the stick. I yearn for the day when our leaders will truly embrace the need to invest in mass transit.
