SI Railway MLK 2019 Service Plan Info

Here is the MTA Staten Island Railway service plan information for observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, January 21:

MTA Staten Island Railway will operate on a regular weekday schedules.  Customers are advised to use the MYmta app or resources on MTA.info to play their trips.

MTA Board To Hold Emergency Meeting

Earlier today, the MTA announced that it will be holding an emergency board meeting this Tuesday to discuss matters related to the train reconstruction project. Here are more details via the press release they asked me to share:

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today announced it will hold an emergency MTA Board meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 15, at 12:00 p.m. to be briefed on matters related to the  Train reconstruction project. At the meeting, which will be open to the public, the Board will be briefed by WSP on the alternative  Train design modifications to the original tunnel restoration plan, also designed by WSP.

WSP has studied the proposed design alternatives and the preliminary new construction schedule developed by the construction manager. WSP will be recommending to the Board that it pursue the modified plan as a better alternative, as it does not require a total shutdown of  train service. The Board will also be discussing the concept of hiring a new consultant reporting directly to the Chairman and the Board to oversee operation, oversight and precautions for the  train and the tunnel reconstruction.

Port Jervis Line Work This Weekend

Earlier today, the MTA Metro-North asked me to share information about the infrastructure work planned on the Port Jervis line this weekend:

MTA Metro-North Railroad today announced that Metro-North crews will make infrastructure improvements to the Port Jervis Line this weekend.

As part of the complete upgrade of the Port Jervis Line signal system, crews will continue installation work on the section of track between Harriman and Campbell Hall.  This new cab signal system needs to be in place to support Positive Train Control operations on the Port Jervis Line. Positive Train Control is a technology designed to reduce the potential for human error that can lead to train-involved accidents.

To accommodate the work, buses will substitute for trains between Port Jervis and Harriman from 11:30 p.m. on Friday, January 11, and continuing until 7 p.m. on Sunday, January 13. Trains will operate on normal schedules between Harriman and Hoboken.

Service details are below:

Outbound: to Port Jervis:

On Friday, January 11, buses will substitute for the 11:30 p.m. and 2:09 a.m. trains from Harriman.

On Saturday, January 12, buses will substitute for all trains operating between Harriman and Port Jervis.

On Sunday, January 13, buses will substitute for the 10:28 a.m., 12:28 p.m., 2:44 p.m. and 5:11 p.m. trains from Harriman to Port Jervis. Train service resumes on Sunday with the 7:20 p.m. train from Harriman to Port Jervis.

Buses will follow train schedules and make all regularly scheduled stops to Port Jervis.

Inbound: to Hoboken

On Saturday, January 12, and Sunday, January 13, buses will substitute for all trains operating between Port Jervis and Harriman. Customers may connect with train service to Hoboken at Harriman.

Customers traveling from Salisbury Mills will be bused to Ramsey-Rt. 17, where they can connect with train service to Hoboken.

Buses will follow train schedules.

Gov. Cuomo Halts L Train Shutdown

If you look up the words clueless & idiot in the dictionary, you would see a picture of New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. Okay while this is not true, I & many others feel it should be especially after his decision to halt the impending train shutdown a.k.a. L-pocalypse. The surprising announcement came at a press conference he held yesterday that included “experts” (more on them in a bit) which rocked the local transit world.

After inspecting the tunnels last month in a clear publicity stunt & consulting, he came up with the plan that cancels the 15 month full shutdown in favor of a plan that would complete the work in 15-20 months while maintaining regular weekday service but have closures at nights & over weekends along with single tracking at other times during nights & weekends.

Now let me get into how ridiculous this whole situation comes off looking. For starters, this plan came out of left field. For over 2 years, the MTA warned riders about how this shutdown would occur & why it had to due to the necessity of the work. To best handle the work, it made sense to shut the system down and get everything done versus doing it parts at a time. Now after many uprooted their lives, now the Governor comes in saying a complete shutdown is completely unnecessary.

Secondly he is basing this plan on the analysis of so called “experts” who in actuality are nothing but ACADEMIC engineers with ZERO experience managing construction projects or complex projects involving the creation of physical objects. However Mr. Know It All Cuomo feels it is better to listen to scholars versus private engineer firms who actually do such work for a living & are true experts in their field.

The best part of this plan is that it involves using technological strategies that have never been tested in terms of subway tunnels even though it has worked in completely unrelated fields. Now why in the world would you take such a chance like this?

Could the answer be political? One can legitimately argue that this plan favors the Manhattan side of the line versus Brooklyn riders. When you look at the public reaction to the MTA’s original plans, while many were frustrated, they did favor the original shutdown with a shorter overall timeline since it was aimed at totally fixing the problems.

Instead of doing that, Cuomo is choosing to go with a risky plan that equates to putting a big band-aid on the problem & kicking the can down the road when he will long be gone from office so his choices can’t hurt him. Would he really put his own agenda ahead of what the situation warrants? Of course he would as that is the true Gov. Cuomo way!
